Television and reality

I was watching a really great episode of Numb3rs, and I was admiring the character Charlie. He's smart, funny, and sexy. So except for Ellen DeGeneres, how is it there is no one ugly on TV?

Everyone depicted on TV has a great smile, a great body, and very few are overweight, or even ethnic. Speaking of which, when are we going to get a Science Fiction TV show with a gay protagonist?

Sure, Will & Grace was the break-out TV show for gays and lesbians, but what about the Star Trek's and the Stargate's of TV? When will this genre of TV show get a gay lead? And when can we see more average looking people on TV? I mean of course, besides Ellen. She looks more plain than my boss.
