Maher Arar is a Canadian, who was deported by the United States, to Syria where he was tortured. This of course goes against both Canadian and American social policy against torturing prisoners. Yet the United States regularly tortures prisoners outside of their own borders.
A public inquiry found that the
RCMP had given improper, and false information to the United States, that lead to his rendition.
Now the House of Commons has voted unamiously to apologize to Arar. The problem is,
he still hasn't received that apology. Did Prime Minister Harper fall asleep at the vote or something? If I were the Prime Minister, the first thing I would have done after that vote is to call him personally, followed up with an official letter.
Mr. Arar did no wrong to Canadian society. He is no terrorist, he is no threat. Yet we treat him like he is one. He was tortured, because the RCMP decided that the United States needed information on him.
To Mr Harper, I say, get off your ass, and phone Mr. Arar. As our representative, you owe it to him.
