Teacher persists on Oprah '08 Web site

Teacher persists on Oprah '08 Web site

I would greatly prefer Oprah as the next US President over some of the other choices. The other choices so far being Hillary Clinton and Al Gore. She is a popular media icon, strives to maintain a blanace, and she would win votes. Plus she would not only be the first female President, but the first African-American President. I suggest that folks visit the website. Very interesting stuff.

So is she a Democrat, Republican, or other?

You know it is a slow news week when...

I swear, it has been a really slow newsweek. Here is some of the stuff the press thinks we want to know about.

Arar report a new headache for U.S. prez

Arar report a new headache for U.S. prez

I'm really glad the Arar report did some good. It cleared Arar, and put light on how bad the U.S. justice system really is. We can all say these things don't happen in a first world country. The United States is changing that, day after day, with their torture of citizens outside of their own borders.

They call it "bending the rules." I call it a violation of principles and ethics.

Lions dying in Indian zoo after failed experiment

Lions dying in Indian zoo after failed experiment

All I can say is wow. How inhumane and cruel is this experiment? These poor lions, caught up in an extremely botched program to cross breed animals. Where are the ethics of these scientsits?

Now, according to the article, the animals are all dying due to various complications with the experiment. This is very stuning to say the lest, I cannot believe that the Indian government let this happen. How cruel.

Let sleeping dogs lie

The Government of Stephen Harper and his minority Conservative government returns to parliament this fall. According to a bulletin from Canadians for Equal Marriage, there is a plan for a vote to re-open the marriage debate. For the record, I'm in favour of the vote, but not in favour of re-opening it, or changing the definition again.

1. I'm in favour of the vote, because I want the Conservatives to be exposed for the right-wing Reform party that they really are. Some believe they can be social moderates. I disagree. I think they are out to harm Canadian society, rather than doing any good.

2. I'm against re-opening the debate because this issue has been settled, and folks on both sides of the debate have moved on. To re-open it now would simply re-open old wounds, and would hurt many Canadians. Every Canadian knows someone who is gay.

3. Changing the definition back is a way to waste tax payers money. The writing is on the wall - if they change it back, the Supreme Court will strike it down, thus wasting tax payers money. In addition, 75% of Canadians, according to a pre-election poll from last year, disagree with using the notwithstanding clause. Thus it is political suicide for anyone who votes to use it.

4. The Green Party believes in the right for same-sex couples to marry, and in gender parity. If you're tired of the Conservatives, take a look at the Green Party platform a little more carefully.

Joe Trippi

When I was at the Green Party convention in August, Joe Trippi was one of the keynote speakers. He was Howard Dean's national campaign manager. No small job, I must tell you.

He talked about the power of blogs, and bringing politics back to the people, with various emerging internet technologies. Really, it was a very nice speech. However, it left me wondering about something.

If all of this was great and wonderful, why isn't Howard Dean the President of the USA? Or why wasn't he even the Democractic nominee? John Kerry ran for President for the Democrats during the last election.

While I am certain Joe hs a lot of valuble insights to share, lessons learned, do's and do not's of a campaign, and so forth, how much should we absorb all of this? How do we know it will really work for the Green Party of Canada, and or various candidates in Canada? After all, it didn't seem to work for Howard Dean.

First-time Mexican director Alejandro Gomez Monteverde was the main winner at the Toronto Film Festival with his movie Bella winning the audience award.

The critics' best film prize went to the controversial Death of a President, a mock documentary imagining the assassination of George Bush.

"I really hope that this is not a dream and that I don't wake up at film school," said Monteverde.
